If you watch it, prepare for a lot of anger and a lot of tears.  I watched it on MSNBC one Sunday night.  I could not believe anyone could be so crazy.
Just reading the plot summary, how exactly did a judge conclude that she should be released from jail and allowed to regain custody of her son? That's almost as crazy as the **** she pulled.

My favorite documentary and one of my top 20 favorite movies is Hoop Dreams. Most of my other favorites have been covered here as well. A few that I didn't see that are worth a mention:

* Crumb
* Murderball
* Mad Hot Ballroom
* Supersize Me
* Who Killed the Electric Car?
* Fahrenheit 9/11
* Some Kind of Monster (Metallica)
* Spellbound
* One Day in September

oh yeah, forgot to mention the filth and the fury, the doc on the sex pistols. i never looked at johnny rotten the same way after seeing that (i use to despise him, now, not so much).

i also liked the joe strummer doc that came out a few years ago, the future is unwritten, i believe. not great but another interesting movie.

You don't really want me to tell you that, right?  Check out the documentary.  It's on netflix.

I watched a documentary on Bill Hicks about two weeks ago.  Incredibly talented man.  I don't know why I thought he was older than 32 when he died.  Great story.

I'm on a documentary kick now. Just finished Man on Wire. Very well done but not quite as gripping or enthralling as I was hoping. Still would recommend highly.

There have been a lot of excellent recommendations here and I'll reiterate a few as well as give one I haven't seen mentioned:

Touching the Void - 2 climbers attempt K2 back in the 80s.
Restrepo - Great look at the war in Afghanistan
Inside Job - Never been this pissed off watching a documentary
Grizzly Man - the guy was nuts but I loved him!
Waiting for Superman - much better than I expected
Dear Zachary - 2nd most pissed off time watching a documentary

There are always a lot of great documentaties at the Full-Frame Festival in Durham every year. I've seen about 30 or so there over the years (including Restrepo)

This year,  I saw several great films, but this one - which I got tickets to really as an afterthought - has really stuck with me the most of all.  A truly haunting and beautiful documentary:

Also, if you are foodie, you might like this one. It's more a film about food as art, and how some people take it to the level of an obsession. It quite fun to watch:

FYI, for those who may not know, Frontline has a good website where you can go and watch a lot of documentaries. Some of there stuff is on netflix, but not all I think

Another good one - this film ensured that I will never in my life be a teacher or work with children in any capacity:

FRONTLINE examines the history and outcome of one of the largest and most controversial child sexual molestation cases - the Little Rascals Day Care center in Edenton, North Carolina.
I don't know that I have ever felt injustice more profoundly than in watching those Innocence Lost docs of Opfra Bikel.   If you don't think true witch hunts can occur in our times, think again.  Powerful and horrific.

On Netflix:

Just finished up God Grew Tired of Us:  really good one about some Sudanese refugees who come to America, their first experience with electricity, housing, jobs.  The excitment of the great opportunity up against all the pain of missing their families back home.  Really heart-wrenching.  Not heavy handed or preachy -- just very well done overall.

^ That is really a good film, and a good perspective jolt on the human experience.

I was already very familiar with the case but just yesterday took the time to watch this:

http://ak.buy.com/PI/0/500/217434922.jpg

To see and hear the words of those involved, and to see the evidence, made this story all the more powerful and enraging.   If Governor Rick Perry (shown in this film) does run for president it needs to openly discussed that he is a gleeful co-conspirator in the murder of an innocent man.

http://www.tribute.ca/tribute_objects/images/movies/Most_Dangerous_Man/MostDangerousMan.jpg

A great story of an American hero of the highest order.

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51maPmdicfL._SS500_.jpg

I was pleased to see this classic doc available on Netflix.  No words can describe this collection of American propaganda footage from the '50s-early '60s, about how nuclear weapons are not scary at all, but fun and exciting.  If you've played the game Fallout 3 a lot of the jokey material it relies on is tapped into this bizarre reality from our past.  You can't imagine this stuff until you see it.
