Player Database - Options, Rule 5 Eligible, etc.
Players with (5+) in the options column have enough service time that they cannot be optioned down without their consent (and are thus effectively out of options). Yes* in the options column means that player is currently using their final option in 2013. The earliest free agent eligibility column is based on no further minor league options being used and exercising any club option years in existing contracts. | Player | Service Time as of opening day 2013 | Options Remaining | Earliest free agent eligibility | 2013 Salary | | Nathan Adcock | 1.062 | Yes | Nov 2017 | $500,450 | | Noel Arguelles | 0.000 | Yes* | Nov 2019 | $750,000 + 630K Pro-rated signing bonus | | Francisley Bueno | 0.078 | Yes* | Nov 2018 | $492,650 | | Billy Butler | 5.102 | Yes (5+) | Nov 2015 | $8,000,000 + 500K Pro-rated signing bonus | | Lorenzo Cain | 1.074 | Yes | Nov 2017 | $503,175 | | Bruce Chen | 9.171 | Yes (5+) | Nov 2013 | $4,500,000 + up to 1.5M bonus based on roster and performance | | Louis Coleman | 1.133 | Yes | Nov 2017 | $511,000 | | Tim Collins | 2.000 | Yes | Nov 2016 | $534,500 | | Aaron Crow | 2.000 | Yes | Nov 2016 | $1,280,000 | | Wade Davis | 3.032 | Yes | Nov 2017 | $2,800,000 | | Danny Duffy | 1.134 | Yes | Nov 2017 | $505,125 | | Chris Dwyer | 0.000 | Yes | Nov 2019 | $490,000 | | Jarrod Dyson | 1.088 | No | Nov 2017 | $506,000 | | Alcides Escobar | 3.082 | Yes | Nov 2017 | $3,000,000 | | Irving Falu | 0.067 | Yes | Nov 2018 | $492,025 | | Jeff Francoeur | 7.088 | Yes (5+) | Nov 2013 | $6,750,000 | | Chris Getz | 4.050 | Yes | Nov 2014 | $1,050,000 + up to 150K in performance bonuses | | Johnny Giavotella | 0.137 | Yes | Nov 2018 | $494,000 | | Alex Gordon | 5.092 | Yes (5+) | Nov 2015 | $9,000,000 | | Jeremy Guthrie | 6.130 | No | Nov 2015 | $5,000,000 | | Juan Gutierrez | 3.035 | No | Nov 2015 | $750,000 | | Kelvin Herrera | 1.008 | Yes | Nov 2017 | $508,175 | | Luke Hochevar | 4.151 | No | Nov 2014 | $4,560,000 + up to 100K in performance bonuses | | Greg Holland | 2.028 | Yes | Nov 2016 | $539,500 | | Eric Hosmer | 1.146 | Yes | Nov 2017 | $528,250 | | Elliot Johnson | 2.028 | No | Nov 2016 | $520,500 | | Donnie Joseph | 0.000 | Yes | Nov 2019 | $490,000 | | George Kottaras | 3.149 | No | Nov 2015 | $1,000,000 | | John Lamb | 0.000 | Yes | Nov 2019 | $490,000 | | David Lough | 0.033 | Yes* | Nov 2018 | $491,625 | | Justin Marks | 0.000 | Yes | Nov 2019 | $490,000 | | Luis Mendoza | 2.063 | No | Nov 2016 | $532,000 | | Mike Moustakas | 1.111 | Yes | Nov 2017 | $524,500 | | Felipe Paulino | 4.163 | No | Nov 2014 | $1,750,000 + up to 250K in performance bonuses | | Salvador Perez | 1.050 | Yes | Nov 2019 | $1,000,000 | | Ervin Santana | 7.104 | Yes (5+) | Nov 2013 | $13,000,000 (Angels paying $1MM) | | James Shields | 6.125 | Yes (5+) | Nov 2014 | $9,000,000 | | Will Smith | 0.092 | Yes | Nov 2018 | $496,500 | | Everett Teaford | 1.087 | Yes* | Nov 2017 | $507,250 | | Miguel Tejada | 14.023 | Yes (5+) | Nov 2013 | $1,100,000 + up to 400K in performance bonuses |

RE: Player Database
So Johnny G and Salvador need to be added to the 40 man to be protected. Who else are we nervous about?

There are 5 that will be coming off the 40 unless they are resigned (not counting Kendall), plus one open spot. CHEN DAVIES FRANCIS FRENCHY TRAENOR Some tough decisions for the FO in the offseason. Edit - Thanks Chup!

RE: Player Database
Could somebody explain the rules on how many years it is for drafted and international players to be rule 5 eligible? I am usually not this lazy to look it up. If I remember right I think international players are added after 5 years and drafted players have to get added after 4 years. I ask because Chup you have Hayenga elgible, but he has played only 3 years in the minors including this year. Does it still count if you are injured or do you have to play? To be a minor league free agent you have to accumulate 7 years in the minors.

That's probably it. Rey Navarro and pitchers like Leondy Perez and Elisaul Pimentel have a small chance of being selected (and an even lower chance of sticking to a 25 man), but probably not enough to add them. They are already thin at SS/3rd and if Bianchi is removed Yamaico Navarro would be the only back up at both positions on the 40 man. I agree that Rey Navarro would be unlikely to stick on another team's 25 man roster for the entire year, but I think they will have to have someone in the minors on the 40 man who could be called up if one of Escobar/Mous/Yamaico were to get hurt.

If I remember right I think international players are added after 5 years and drafted players have to get added after 4 years. International players are under the same rules as domestic drafted players. The "5 years" is a general rule of thumb as 99% of international kids sign before they are 19. You also get some cases of international players signing after the season in September+ which does not count towards their first year. The MLR 5 is actually pretty simple, if a player is 18 or younger on June 5 in the year that they sign (as long as they sign during the minor league baseball season and not September/October/November/December- the draft and follow used to take advantage of this before they did away with it), they become eligible for the 5th rule 5 draft after their signing. If they are 19 or older June 5th, it is their 4th Rule 5 draft when they become eligible. No To be a minor league free agent you have to accumulate 7 years in the minors. Yes Something that caught me by suprise while compiling this is that SOS is out of options after this year (along with Kila). Despite his struggles, I don't see him making it through waivers if he were to be designated.

I think kila will be traded or DFA'd this winter. he just doesnt have a place here, and we have guys we have to add to the roster

Not that I think we will get anything for him, but I would like to see him get a chance somewhere. He has no shot here considering we have two better options, and in the event of an injury to Butler or Hosmer, we still have C-Rob to fill in.

It is from one of the greatest shows of all time, Futurama, a sewer dewlling version of the chupacabra, el chupanibre feasts on the mutants until being flushed to a even mutanty lower sewer. (Btw my spelling is way off, I am sleep deprived)

Thanks, walker. My pop culture awareness just isn't what it used to be.

Re: Player Database
Updated the front page with service times accumulated this year, as well as the Rule 5 eligible and Minor League free agent lists after the Royals released/re-signed some players.
While there isn't a roster crunch this year, with Sisk as the only player likely to be added before December IMO, I'll give a quick peek into what challenges the Royals will face next year. The following are just some notable names that will be Rule 5 eligible in 2012:
Buddy Baumann Greg Billo Chris Dwyer Patrick Keating John Lamb Justin Marks Tim Melville Mike Montgomery Jake Odorizzi Tyler Sample Will Smith Kendal Volz Robinson Yambati
Obviously a few of these guys might not be at risk of being taken (will Yambati continue to suck next year?), but combined with the guys on this year's list like Navarro or Santiago who might actually be at risk of being taken next year, there will be some tough roster decisions coming in 2012.
